What We Handle Under Switchboard Upgrades

Board work covers more ground than people expect, and what yours needs comes down to what is bolted to the wall right now and how hard the house has been pushing it. These are the jobs that live under this banner.

01

Full board replacement

We take the old board off the wall and put a new enclosure up. Every circuit is then re-terminated, tested and labelled, so you can find the right switch in the dark.

02

Fuse-to-breaker conversions

Rewireable ceramic fuses come out and circuit breakers go in. A fault then flicks a switch, instead of asking you to cut and thread a fresh length of fuse wire.

03

Safety switches on every circuit

RCBOs give each circuit its own earth-leakage protection. One faulty appliance trips its own circuit rather than the whole house, and the fridge keeps running.

04

Circuit labelling and tidy-up

Every circuit gets identified, tested and written up. Handy on a Sunday, genuinely useful the day you sell.

05

Defect rectification

If a defect notice has flagged something at your board, we correct it and handle the paperwork behind it.

Signs You Need Switchboard Upgrades

Most boards do not fail loudly. They just quietly stop being enough for the house that grew around them, and the signs turn up in ordinary ways.

  • You still replace fuse wire by hand when a circuit blows
  • A breaker trips whenever the toaster and the heater are both on
  • The board is full, with no room for another circuit
  • The cover feels warm, or you can hear it buzzing or crackling
  • There is no test button anywhere on the board
  • An electrician has flagged the board on a sale or lease inspection

A warm cover or a buzzing board is a live fault. That is what our emergency electrician work exists for, so do not sit on either.

Switchboard Upgrades in Kingsford Homes

Kingsford was carved up in the 1920s land boom, and a lot of what went up then is still standing.

Interwar and mid-century houses from that build-out often still run ceramic rewireable fuse boards. That is a board where a blown circuit means threading in new fuse wire by hand.

Boards like that were sized for a kettle, a wireless and a few lights. They were never asked to carry an induction cooktop, a wall of chargers and a ceiling full of downlights.

The bigger gap is protection. Fuse wire melts to save the wiring, and it does not care about whoever happens to be holding the drill.

That is what an upgrade fixes. You get a safety switch on every circuit, labelling you can read, and space for the next thing you plug in.

Switchboard Upgrades Pricing: What Moves the Quote

No two boards are carrying the same house, so nobody can price one down the phone. Here is what shifts the price.

  • How many circuits you end up with. Each gets its own RCBO, so the count drives the board size and most of the gear.
  • What your supply will take. A house on single-phase behaves differently to one on three, and an outgrown supply turns into Level 2 work as well.
  • What the old board is hiding. Nobody knows what the tails behind an ageing fuse board look like until the cover comes off, and whatever fails a test gets sorted first.
  • Where the board lives. A meter box at waist height in an open carport is a different day to one boxed into a stairwell.
  • What has to be rectified. Occasionally testing turns up something the old board was quietly covering for, and that is quoted separately.

Quotes are free, and they come to you in writing. We don't charge by the hour, and the price is agreed before any work starts.

The Process, and What It Typically Takes

Four steps, and you always know which one you are at. A single-phase changeover in a house is typically a day, and your power is down for a good part of that.

  1. Eyes on the board first. Cover off, circuits identified, supply checked. Ten minutes of looking saves an argument later about what the job really is.

  2. The price, in writing. One fixed written price covering labour, gear, GST and paperwork. If something unforeseen shows up once we are into it, we stop and talk it through first.

  3. Changeover day. Power off, old board out, new enclosure and RCBOs in, every circuit re-terminated and labelled. We put drop sheets down and the place left tidy.

  4. Testing and sign-off. Every circuit gets tested before we sign off, and the compliance paperwork is lodged with NSW Fair Trading with a copy emailed straight to you.

Standards and Paperwork, Explained Simply

Two documents matter here, and chasing neither of them is your job.

First, AS/NZS 3000. Those are the wiring rules every board is built to, and they are why a new one needs residual current protection rather than fuse wire.

We read that as an RCBO per circuit, not one shared safety switch (RCD) guarding half the house.

Second, the certificate of compliance for electrical work. Swapping a board is notifiable electrical work, so it gets lodged with NSW Fair Trading and you keep the record.

Worth saying plainly: DIY electrical work is illegal in NSW. A board is the worst place to find that out, because its incoming side stays live even with the main switch down.

The Difference on a Switchboard Upgrades Job

Anyone can hang a board on a wall. The difference is what goes inside it.

We fit Clipsal and Hager switchgear, not cheap imports. That costs a little more on the quote, and it is the part of the job you never think about again, which is the entire point.

Then there is the record. A tested board with a labelled schedule is something you can prove at sale time.

What Usually Gets Booked at the Same Time

Board open, power off: a few jobs are cheaper folded in now than booked later.

Adding circuits is the common one, because a new board has room the old one never had.

If the wiring behind it is as tired as the board, our residential electrician work covers the rewiring side.

Where the supply is the limit instead, that becomes consumer mains work and both happen in the one visit.

Common questions

Your Switchboard Upgrades FAQs

Short answers to what people ask before booking a board changeover. Anything else, get in touch and ask.

Do NSW rules require anything to be lodged for switchboard upgrades?

Yes, a board changeover counts as notifiable electrical work, so the certificate of compliance gets lodged with NSW Fair Trading and you keep a copy. None of that is yours to organise.

Can I supply my own gear, or do you bring the materials?

We bring it, and the quote covers it. Buying switchgear online usually costs more once we have checked it suits the board, and the product warranty gets murky when it is your purchase.

How much of the day should I set aside for switchboard upgrades?

Set the working day aside. Most single-phase changeovers in a house wrap up inside one, and the lights are out for a decent block in the middle while the new gear goes up.

What usually tells people they need switchboard upgrades?

Fuse wire instead of switches is the big one. After that: breakers that trip often, a board with no room left, or a cover that feels warm or hums at you from the hallway.

Is my older place suitable for switchboard upgrades?

Almost always. The interwar and mid-century stock across Kingsford is exactly what we upgrade most, and an ageing board is a reason to book rather than a reason to put it off.

Can switchboard upgrades be booked for a Saturday in Kingsford?

A board upgrade is planned work, so it runs inside our standard hours, Monday to Friday, 7am to 5pm. Give us a ring and we will book a time that suits, or call any hour of the night if it is a genuine emergency.
