How to Tell You Need Light Installation

Lighting rarely dies all at once. It just stops matching the way you use the rooms, and you notice it at the wrong moment.

  • Halogen downlights that heat the room up before they light it
  • A globe you have replaced twice this year in the same spot
  • Fittings that flicker or buzz softly when the dimmer is halfway
  • One dim ceiling rose trying to cover a whole open-plan living space
  • Dark corners you work around, rather than a layout you chose
  • A back yard or path you cannot see after 6pm

If a light flickers across several rooms at once, that is not a fitting problem. Call us about fault finding instead, because the trouble is further back.

Light Installation: What We Actually Do

Everything from one pendant over a table to a whole-home replan: some of it design, most of it cable, all of it licensed work. This is the ground we cover.

01

LED downlight replacement

Old halogens come out, LEDs go in, with correct clearance to insulation and the ceiling battens. Cooler ceiling, smaller bill, better light.

02

New light points and circuits

Fresh points where there were none, run properly back to the board rather than spurred off the nearest thing that happened to be handy.

03

Dimmers, sensors and two-way switching

Dimming needs the fitting and the dimmer to actually agree. We match them, wire the switching, and set it so nothing hums.

04

Pendants, feature and cabinet lighting

Kitchen islands, stairwells, wardrobes and shelves. The gear is easy; the height, spacing and switching are what make it look deliberate.

05

Outdoor, security and garden lighting

Weather-rated fittings, floodlights and sensors, wired for a wet Sydney summer rather than a dry catalogue photo.

What Your Light Installation Quote Depends On

Nobody can price lighting from a description, because two rooms with the same number of lights can be completely different jobs. Here is what we are weighing up.

  • How many points, and where they land. Six lights in one ceiling is one job. Six lights across four rooms is four.
  • Whether there is a cable to reuse. Swapping a fitting on a sound existing point is quick. A brand new point means a run all the way back to the board.
  • The fittings themselves. We will show you options from honest and cheap through to the good stuff, and the choice is genuinely yours.
  • How we get above the ceiling. Roof space you can move in is one thing. A ceiling with a home on the other side of it is another.
  • The switching you want. Dimming, sensors and two-way switches each need their own wiring, and that is decided before we start, not after.

You get a fixed written quote before anything is touched. We don't charge by the hour, and the price is agreed before any work starts.

What We See in Kingsford Homes

Kingsford is a unit suburb before it is a house suburb. Most households here are in an apartment, and semis outnumber the freestanding places.

Density changes a lighting job more than people expect.

In a flat, what sits above your ceiling is another home, not a roof space. So the downlight layout gets planned around what that ceiling will actually take, and the cable route is decided before a single hole gets cut.

Shared walls do the same thing to wall lights and switch drops. There is no cavity to drop a cable down when the wall belongs to next door as well.

And the moment a fitting is outside your front door, it stops being yours. Stair lights, car park lights and hallway fittings are common property, so they go through the building rather than through you.

What NSW Requires for Light Installation

Lighting looks like the softest job on the list. Legally, it is not.

Every hardwired fitting here is licensed work. That covers a downlight swap, not just a new circuit, and DIY electrical work is illegal in NSW no matter how simple the fitting looks on the box.

The wiring rules are AS/NZS 3000, and downlights are where they bite hardest. Clearances to insulation and timber are not a suggestion; recessed fittings run hot, and ceiling insulation packed against one is a genuine fire risk.

If the job is notifiable, meaning fresh cable or an added point, a certificate of compliance is lodged with NSW Fair Trading and a copy comes to you.

The Process, and What It Typically Takes

Four steps. Most fitting swaps are a half-day, and a full replan across a home runs longer, so we tell you which one yours is before you commit.

  1. We walk the rooms with you. Where you read, where you cook, where the glare lands. Layout decisions are cheap now and expensive once the holes are cut.

  2. A fixed written quote. Fittings, labour, GST and any paperwork, all in one price. If your fittings are common property, strata approval gets sorted before the booking is locked in.

  3. Install day. Drop sheets down, holes cut clean, fittings hung level and switching wired the way you asked for it.

  4. Tested, then handed over. Every point is tested before we sign off, we walk it with you at night if that helps, and the offcuts leave with us.

The Difference on a Light Installation Job

Lighting is the one trade job you look at every single evening for a decade. It is worth having done by someone who has to put their licence next to it.

We work under NSW electrical contractor licence #452529C, and the work is checked and tested rather than eyeballed.

Then there are the 600+ five-star reviews behind us. Lighting is the job where a millimetre out is a millimetre you notice from the couch every night, so that record matters here.

The Fittings We Use and Why

The gear is the half of this job you cannot change later without paying twice, so we are picky about it.

For fittings we lean on SAL and Beacon Lighting. Both are properly supported in Australia, both have replacement parts you can still get in five years, and neither dies quietly the way a no-name driver does.

For switching and dimming, Clipsal. Dimmers are where cheap gear announces itself, usually as a buzz you cannot unhear.

Everything we supply carries a 12-month product warranty on top of the maker's own.

Servicing Kingsford and the Suburbs Around It

Lighting is our regular run, not a sideline: through Kingsford, and across Coogee, Randwick and Eastlakes week in, week out. We cover the surrounding Randwick area as well.

A lighting quote can turn into a conversation about the board behind it, so switchboard upgrades and general residential work sometimes ride along.

Common questions

Light Installation FAQs

The questions people ask us before booking lighting. If yours is not one of them, get in touch.

Can I buy my own light fittings, or do you supply them?

Either way works, and plenty of people arrive with a pendant they have already fallen for. We will fit it if it is compliant and safe, and anything we supply carries a 12-month product warranty on top.

Will light installation still work with really old wiring?

Usually, though it depends what we find above the ceiling. Old circuits often have no earth at the light point, and modern fittings want one, so that stretch of cable gets replaced.

What do you need from me on the day?

Clear floor space under each fitting and somewhere to park. If your place is a flat and the light is in a shared hallway or stairwell, we need strata approval sorted before we arrive.

Is a Certificate of Compliance included with light installation?

If it is notifiable work, yes, and it costs you nothing extra. Adding a circuit or a new point earns one; a fitting swapped onto a healthy existing point generally does not.

Is light installation something a handyman can legally do?

No. Anything hardwired is licensed work in NSW, including a simple downlight swap, and plugging in a lamp is where the line sits.

What does light installation usually cost?

There is no flat rate, because a fitting swap and a fresh circuit are different jobs. We quote on site for free, in writing, and the price holds once you accept it.
